GIS

Computer Education for all students started in Loreto College as early as 1986. Following this GIS was introduced for the students in the Geography Department. Students of 3rd Year Geography (both Honours and General) are offered this as an optional course. Till date the C.U. syllabus does not include GIS Applications in their undergraduate syllabus.

The software's taught are MAPINFO, AUTOCAD, and CADOVERLAY and 21st century GIS (a locally developed programme that can generate isopleths and also do basic satellite imagery.)

The numbers of classes per course are 20 (4 for tests and unlimited practice time). At the end of the course students are awarded certificates. The college has a dedicated computer centre where the GIS classes are held. Each class has a student-teacher ratio of 4:1 and a student computer ration 1:1.

Career Prospects - After graduating with Geography students with GIS training can apply to offices that use GIS for commercial purposes. Last year 4 students had also been offered positions on short term projects at NATMO
