Value education has always been an integral part of Loreto education and no less in Loreto higher education. The students of Loreto College, Kolkata attend one session of Value Education per week. In these sessions, students are helped to cherish Loreto values of Love, Freedom, Justice and Sincerity even while they strive to attain excellence to the best of each one's potential. These sessions are not just mere exhortations; they involve active participation and reflection on the experience of existential situations in life, in the country and in our world. The aim is empowerment of oneself as one empowers others. Special emphasis is placed on sensitivity, openness and responsibility to those in need - spiritual need or sheer physical want of food, clothing, finance or shelter. Students are also given courses on gender issues, marriage, motherhood, HIV and drug awareness, medical drug dependence, sexual and physical abuse, cancer prevention and numerous other issues as time permits. The Value Education sessions are times for building confidence and security, the ability to articulate opinions, community building where young women from various religious, social and economic backgrounds communicate with mutual respect and understanding and contribute towards building, persons, families, communities and the Nation.
Value Education Classes for the B.Ed are organised once a week throughout the academic Session. Students demonstrate value education during practice teaching.
