The
aim of this department is to impart quality education, preparing
students for various wide-ranging vocations from teaching to counselling,
management, social service, media and, of course, higher education.
The teaching includes lectures, paper presentations, discussions,
seminars, research projects, film shows, day excursions, etc. There
is a well-stocked seminar library in addition to the collection
in the main library. Evaluation consists of graded tutorials, graded
home assignments, promotion and selection examinations as well as
university examinations.

The
English Department offers a wide range of courses and encourages
students to be critical interpretative and appreciative of literatures. The
main objective is to produce students capable of independent thinking
and judgment. Academic work includes seminars, lectures and discussions
on various course-related and other subjects. Students are evaluated
on the basis of class tests, regular weekly tutorials and group
discussions as well as periodic college & university examinations.
Students are encouraged to use the well-stocked departmental seminar
library as well as the main college library. Guest lectures are
invited and the departmental links with other institutions of Higher
Education.
Courses offered by the English Department include the 3 year
Honours Degree Course and the 3 year General Degree Course. The
department also teaches Alternative English (50 marks) and Compulsory
English (50 marks) as per Calcutta University requirements. Some
members of the English Department also teach aspects of the Communicative
English Course.

History Department seeks to provide in-depth knowledge of the past
as well as an understanding of the nature of historical change.
Students are introduced to historical methodology and given preliminary
training in research methods. The department aims to provide liberal
education for all as well as training for professional research.
They are encouraged to improve their communicative and analytical
skills, to acquire a fundamental knowledge of world events and develop
the ability to make effective presentations. Academic work includes
lectures, tutorials and seminars. Students have access to the departmental

Political Science Department aims to provide an analytical understanding
of the political system both at the micro and macro levels, and
offers comprehensive study of a dynamic discipline through discussions
on topical issues. Evaluation of academic performance is ensured
through graded tutorials, bi-monthly class tests and college/university
examinations. Apart from curricular work, the department conducts
regular seminars involving presentations, workshops and youth parliaments,
in which all students are expected to participate. academics go
beyond the syllabi.

goal of the department is to help develop a questioning mind, so
that learning is a pleasure and not merely a duty. The department
aims at directing students to higher academics or professional courses.
The curriculum involves writing papers, conducting seminars, tutorials,
fieldwork practicals and mapmaking methods. The main college library
has an invaluable collection on the subject while the departmental
seminar library contains field reports, journals and collections
of slides on different parts of India where field surveys were conducted.
Evaluation of students focuses on internal assessments, graded tutorials
and college/university examinations.
Courses
offered by the Geography Department include the 3 year Honours Degree
Course and the 3 year General Degree Course. The Department also
teaches the method paper in Geography for the B.Ed. course.
In
addition to the Calcutta University syllabus, as computer mapping
is now considered an essential part of resource management and spatial
analysis, the Department has launched an additional course on GIS
(Geographical Information Systems) for all Geography Honours students.
Students are familiarized with GIS software commonly used today
for geographical research.

Economics Department aims to impart logical skills in a comprehensive
and scientific manner. It is one of the more popular subjects at
the General level; a large number of students pursuing various Honours
disciplines take Economics as a subsidiary subject. Geography Honours
students must take economics as a subsidiary subject. Lectures and
discussion sessions on various aspects of the syllabus and related
topics are regularly held. Students are evaluated on the basis of
tutorials, class assignments and college & university examinations.
There is a good collection of books and periodicals in the library.

Psychology Department aims at the all-round development of students,

to understand their own behaviour and needs and to cope with the

learn to collect and interpret data on volunteer subjects, thus
acquiring first-hand practice in using clinical tests. Students

The
Communicative English Department offers vocational training for
students aspiring for jobs in marketing and sales, counselling, public
relations, media or teaching. Academic work includes papers, seminars,
practical sessions, on-job training in office and school. Written
& oral tests as well as internal and external assessments of
reports based on real-life experience are the basis of student evaluations.
Special features of this course includes on-the-job training in
corporate offices for a month, presentations at different institutions
and on-job training as Conversational English Tutors in schools
and Field Survey Projects, leading to the B.A. (Major) in Communicative
English. The department avails of support offered by the British
Council in English Language Teaching.

focus of the Film Studies Department is to guide the present generation
of students towards an analytical reception of the widely prevalent
audio-visual culture. The curriculum is geared to springboard the
more enthusiastic students to a career in the film industry. There
will be regular screenings of selected films, scriptwriting sessions
and demonstrations of techniques in addition to regular theoretical
classes. The library stocks books, VCDs and video cassettes. Student

the first time, Human Rights as an area of study have been
introduced at the undergraduate level at Loreto College, Kolkata
under Calcutta University in 2005. It is a dynamic course; the
syllabus covers a wide spectrum of topics like the meaning, scope,
nature and importance of Human Rights, the origin and history of
Human Rights, various Human Rights theories, the United Nations and
Human Rights. It also discusses topics which are most relevant in
today's social milieu such as peace, terrorism and militarization,
democracy etc. The students are also encouraged to interact with
organizations such as the State Human Rights Commission and NGOs
working in this field.
